2013 Heavy Hitting Horrorfest Awards

The Return of HorrorFest had a little bit of everything – from high-gloss productions to piss-poor deviancy to laughs, tears and a few churning stomachs. With a run-and-gun show flow that included films from overseas and from the usual local savages, the judges had their work cut out for them. When the dust settled this is how it went:

BEST IN SHOW - 'Dia de los Meurtos', Dir - Gigi Saul Guererro / Luchagore productions. Gigi's Mexican Brothel revenge flick featured excellent pacing, production value and creative bloodwork. In their second year at Heavy Hitting HorrorFest (Gigi's 'Dead Crossing' was a standout in 2011) The Luchagore crew takes him the coveted Silver Skull Trophy as well as two seats of Catskiing with Powder Mountain Catskiing, a brand new Snowboard or Ski from Prior Skis and Snowboards, a Whistler Film Festival Industry Pass, a William F. White rental package for their next project, a rental package from Lorne Lapham, and a pair of LandYachtz Longboards.

PEOPLE'S CHAMPION - The People loved 'Best Actress' by Sharai Rewels and Angie Nolan. Starring key players and filmmakers from other horrorfest films in a tale of intrigue and entrails, Best Actress took home a custom grow box from BC Northern Lights and a Fondue tour for two from Canadian Wilderness Adventures. They also hauled in some highly useable paraphernalia and swag from Puff and the New Amsterdam Cafe, as well as the incredible PEOPLES CHAMP custom belt from Love Jules Leather.

The Erin Solowey-Wanamaker Memorial "MANIMAL AWARD" for Most Fearless Performance went to Corrina Laveque, an actress in 'Dream Shocker'. Corrina walked off the stage with a party pack to the next three live shows at the Garibaldi Lift Company, a helmet/goggles package from Sandbox, a special Landyachtz board with graphics by Festival co-founder Chili Thom and a Whistler Film Festival Lab Pass.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Award went to 'The Candy Bowl', a stop-motion LEGO film from Whistler's own Adam Forrester. Adam won a custom, hand-made Khukri knife from Base Camp X, a Landyachtz longboard and a lovely PUFF bong.

BEST DEATH SCENE - went to a particularly realistic vehicular suicide scene in Ben Stoddards '25 Ways to Kill Your Girlfriend'. Ben wins a massive custom "Rage" Axe from Base Camp x and a Whistler Film Festival Lab pass.

BEST ACTRESS went to Sharai Rewels for her work in Conrad Schapansky's 'Here Kiddie Kiddie' and her own 'Best Actress'. Sharai is now a three-time winner of the BEST ACTRESS award and since she's started getting all "meta" about it perhaps this will be the last year she's eligible. She took home a sweet Landyachtz board, a nice PUFF smoking piece and a 4-pack to all the late night horror films at the upcoming Whistler Film Festival.

BEST ACTOR went to Miles Wilkinson for outstanding performances in three separate films, including a pitch perfect portrayal of a douchy film director in 'Best Actress' and a genius interpretation of evil Tin Man in Chili Thom's Wizard of Oz reboot, 'Tin Man'. MIles also nabbed a sweet Landyachtz board, a nice PUFF smoking piece and a 4-pack to all the late night horror films at the upcoming Whistler Film Festival.

BEST NUDE SCENE is always a popular category and this year's winner Danielle Lawson took home the prize with a triple threat performance. She zombie-coated herself in entrails while simultaneously singing lyrics she had written in a music video submission she also directed entitled 'Cerebrum'. Danielle wins a $500 gift certificate at Gotham Steakhouse in Vancouver as well as a Whistler Film Festival Lab Pass.

BEST VISUAL EFFECT went to Benny Stoddard for the Vehicular Suicide shot in '25 Ways to Kill Your Girlfriend'. He took home $200 cash courtesy of Sandbox, and a Whistler Film Festival Lab Pass.

BEST COSTUME of the night went to Andrea Cooney who blended into the night in a disturbing and demonic "shadow" costume that wowed the judges.

Thanks to all the filmmakers, and crew and especially the companies who partnered up and provided these excellent prizes.
