Heavy Hitting HorrorFest Media Release For immediate release – Thursday, August 23, 2018 WHISTLER, BC: They say the lost live forever in the stories we tell, but a bloody chainsaw with an engraved plaque works too…
To celebrate the memory of its co-founder Chili Thom, Heavy Hitting Horrorfest is pleased to announce the first ever Chili Thom Memorial Trophy, to be awarded at HorrorFest: Resurrection this October 30, 2018.
“HorrorFest is a community,” explains co-founder Feet Banks. “Some of the filmmakers and actors we’ll see this year have been down since day one — 15 years of supporting each other for the simple reason of having fun and creating art. That was exactly how Chili and I envisioned it and it would feel strange to resurrect the community without finding a way to ensure he was still a part of it.”
Thom succumbed to cancer in 2016 and HorrorFest has been on hiatus ever since. In homage to his friend’s legacy, Banks intends to build the Memorial Trophy from Chili’s old bloody chainsaw, a prop from an early HorrorFest film. The trophy will be accompanied by a cash prize of $666.69.
This year HorrorFest is proud to have the following confirmed sponsors help bring the festival to back to life: Après Larger, The Dream Team, 99 North, Directors Guild of Canada (British Columbia), Aava Whistler Hotel, Bass Coast Music and Arts Festival, LUX Visual Effects, Canadian Wilderness Adventures, Ten Tree and the Whistler Film Festival. “We’re seeing a lot of support,” Banks says. It feels so amazing to see the community step up and celebrate film, Chili, and this whole bloody, crazy little scene that we’ve grown here.”
Best in Show for the 2018 Heavy Hitting HorrorFest will take home the coveted Silver Skull Trophy as well as “at least” $1,500 cash. Other cash prizes include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Effect, the People’s Choice, and the Erin Sollowey “Manimal” Award for Most Fearless Performance.
As for the first ever Chili Thom Memorial Trophy and accompanying $666.69: “It’s going to the winner of Best Nude Scene,” Banks explains. “Chili would have wanted it that way.”

ABOUT HEAVY HITTING HORRORFEST
The Heavy Hitting HorrorFest was hatched in Whistler in 2002 by Feet Banks and Chili Thom as a one-night blender of horrorific, hilarious and very independent short films screening to a group of local filmmakers and their friends.
Over a decade later, The HorrorFest has evolved into the largest and longest-running horror film festival in Western Canada attracting film fans and filmmakers from around the world. In a town known for its massive parties and huge events, Heavy Hitting HorrorFest is one of the most anticipated events on the Whistler calendar packing rabid film fans into an evening of movies, costumes and musical mayhem.
Since its inception, the HorrorFest has been a launching pad for young filmmakers and continues to attract industry pros with its emphasis on making movies for the pure and simple joy of it. At Heavy Hitting HorrorFest your art film might get booed and your bad taste might get cheered, but either way you’re gonna have the night of your life.
